Revealed this week was the hybrid Polestar 1, a four-seater grand tourer which generates 447kW (600 horsepower) and has a range of 150km on pure electric power alone. Polestar unveiled the 600bhp Polestar 1, its first auto, which is set to roll off the production line in mid-2019.
China has set strict quotas for electric and hybrid vehicles that carmakers need to hit by 2019 and has begun looking at an eventual ban on the production and sale of cars using traditional fuels. That model is planned as Polestar's highest-volume vehicle and will go into production later in 2019.
Thomas Ingenlath, Chief Executive Officer of Polestar, said: "Polestar 1 is the first vehicle to carry the Polestar on the bonnet". It also features Ohlins continuously controlled electric suspension (CESi).
Polestar, which together with Volvo is owned by China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, is constructing a state-of-the-art development and production facility in Chengdu, China (it's where Volvo already has a plant).
Polestar 2 will start production later in 2019 and will be the first battery-electric vehicle (BEV) from the Volvo Car Group. Polestar has reworked roughly 50 percent of the car's structure, however, optimizing it for a sharp, agile ride befitting of a GT performance flagship. Now under construction, it is due for completion in mid-2018. Both will be battery electric vehicles (BEVs).
Perhaps the most interesting part of Polestar's launch as a standalone brand is that you'll not be able to outright buy one of their models, at least for now, as the company hasn't announced yet any other official purchasing options apart from a subscription service that lasts two or three years, depending on your choice. Shortly thereafter, Polestar will introduce a smaller fully electric model to fight the Tesla Model 3 and eventually it will roll out a third model that will take the shape of an SUV. A single monthly payment will streamline related expenses like insurance and maintenance, and Polestar will offer pick-up/drop-off servicing for when it's time for that oil change or tire rotation.
"We believe that subscription is the future", said Jonathan Goodman, Polestar's chief operating officer.
