Rohingya inflow into Bangladesh continues

State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is about to deliver her address at the second anniversary of the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement in Nay Pyi Taw on October 15

More than half a million Rohingya minority Muslims have fled across the border to Bangladesh to escape what they say is brutal treatment at the hands of Myanmar's security forces.

"There are now nearly 1 million Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh: the 582,000 (who fled Myanmar since August 25 this year) joined the 400,000 who had already fled there following previous periods of targeted attacks, notably in 2012 and 2016".

According to the United Nations, more than 530,000 Rohingya have been forced to flee to Bangladesh since the offensive began.

"We really hold the military leadership accountable for what's happening with the Rakhine area", Tillerson told an audience in Washington, referring to the area in western Myanmar where thousands of Rohingya have been killed or forced to flee in recent months.

On Tuesday, global aid agencies sharply revised upward their overall estimate for the number of Rohingya refugees who have fled to southeastern Bangladesh amid a cycle of violence in Rakhine that broke out on August 25.

Tensions have escalated into violence in Myanmar's northern Rakhine state.

Yet the sheer number of Rohingya refugees negates the disclaimer. "Every minute counts, given the fragile condition they're arriving in", UNHCR spokesperson Andrej Mahecic said here. Several said that they were stopped by Bangladeshi border guards and spent the night in muddy rice fields.

Faced with wide worldwide condemnation over the exodus of half a million Rohingya people, mostly to neighbouring Bangladesh, Myanmar's military finally succumbed to growing pressure and ordered an internal probe into the conduct of its military vis-à-vis this minority Muslim group.

Satellite images have emerged that allegedly prove Rohingya villages were torched after Myanmar said "clearance operations" had ceased.

On Aug. 25, a Rohingya insurgent group known as the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army attacked at least 30 security posts on Aug. 25, causing dozens of casualties, according to Myanmar authorities.

On Monday, the European Union announced it was reviewing military cooperation with Myanmar, as the bloc called on Myanmar to bring to justice the perpetrators of crimes against the Rohingya.

The UN has described the violence in Rakhine as a textbook case of ethnic cleansing, with displaced Rohingya Muslims in Bangladesh describing whole villages being razed, gang rapes and massacres.
