Ford announces recall of 1.3 million vehicles due to door latch issue

Ford recalls 1.3 million F-series pickups

Ford cited a "frozen door latch" or a "bent or kinked actuation cable", which may prevent the vehicle's doors from opening or closing.

The recall involves approximately 1,344,605 vehicles in North America, including 1,101,107 in the United States and federalized territories, 222,408 in Canada and 21,090 in Mexico.

As a result, doors may not open (not good in an emergency situation) or may not fully close, potentially swinging open while the truck is moving (also very bad).

Ford says it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the issue.

Ford's F-150 pickup truck is one of the country's most popular vehicles and a perennial best-seller.

Ford dealerships will install water shields and make any repairs that are necessary free of charge to customers.

According to a report filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Ford expects that repairs for the trucks will cost around $267 million.

The Center for Auto Safety, a nonprofit group founded by Ralph Nader, on Monday called on Ford to recall more than 1 million Explorer SUVs for alleged risk of carbon-monoxide poisoning.

Although the F-Series roots are as a work truck, Ford has been pushing the vehicle line upscale. Selecting all options on the highest level F-450 Limited runs the total price up to $94,455.
