Actress Alyssa Milano Sparks 'Me Too' Sexual Harassment Awareness Campaign

Actress Alyssa Milano calls on women to share sex assault, harassment encounters with #metoo hashtag

A post shared by actress Alyssa Milano explains that if people who have been sexually assaulted or harassed tweet "me too", it might "give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem".

One of the first to come forward was actor Rose McGowan, who starred in the TV series "Charmed" with Milano. She is also friends with Weinstein's wife, Georgina Chapman, and wrote in a blog post that she was sickened by the "disturbing" sexual abuse allegations against him.

Milano's tweet has garnered over 12,000 comments, the majority of which say "Me too", and have each generated their own thread of responses.

On Monday Twitter confirmed to CNN that #MeToo had been tweeted more than a half a million times.

The messages were striking in their simplicity, and in the sheer number of them.

THOUSANDS of women across the world have taken to social media using the hashtag #Metoo to raise awareness of sexual assault and harassment.

Some pointed out that for all the women posting "me too", there are still thousands who likely would not post for many reasons.

I was told not to talk about it. I said no. He ripped my shirt. "Your story is valid whether you share it or not".

"By my mom's then boyfriend", one tweet said.

"Me, too. I spoke out". The grassroots campaign has quickly gone viral. #YesAllWomen, #WhyIStayed, #YouOKSis and #EverdaySexism are just a few hashtags that ask women to share their experiences of sexual harassment, assault and other forms of sexual violence. Victims who may have suffered in silence seem to feel liberated, knowing they're not alone.

A similar social media campaign is playing out on Instagram among models who are sharing stories of abuse and harassment in the fashion industry.

Because I was shamed and considered a "party girl" I felt I deserved it.

A third of women between 18 and 34 report being sexually harassed at work, according to a Cosmopolitan survey of more than 2,000 women in 2015. Twitter briefly suspended her account following the revelations.
