US Sen. Angus King: Collins is putting ME 1st

Gorham businessman to seek Republican nomination for governor

Republican Sen. Susan Collins is set to announce whether she will stay in the U.S. Senate or run for governor of her home state of Maine. "You are such a person'". By all accounts, Collins is an overwhelming favorite to win re-election again in 2020, but there had been some speculation that she might decide to forgo that sure thing for the opportunity to become Governor in what would have been an open-seat election due to the fact that controversial Republican Governor Paul LePage is term-limited.

A popular figure in Maine, Collins has previously spoken about the appeal of serving as governor, a job that would allow her to "work more directly on job creation".

"I am a congenital optimist, and I continue to believe that Congress can - and will - be more productive".

The moderate Republican was first elected in 1996 and has played a pivotal role in the Senate in recent debates about health care policy. She also slammed her GOP colleagues for drafting bills to repeal and replace the ACA behind closed doors over the summer. "Ultimately I've been guided by my sense of where I can do the most good for Maine and the nation", she said.

"And I have concluded that the best way that I can contribute to these priorities is to remain a member of the United States Senate", Collins said. Susan Collins (R-ME) criticized Senate Republican leadership for shutting women out of the process of developing health care legislation.

Had she run and won the race for governor in 2018, she would have become the first woman in ME to hold the office. Collins was one of three Republicans - along with Sens.

"This decision has not been an easy one", she said. The governor has since used his weekly radio addresses and conservative radio appearances to berate Collins over her opposition to two controversial bills repealing the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare. In July, Collins was caught on a hot mic voicing concerns about Trump's understanding of the budget and debt ceiling, as well as responding to a Republican congressman who challenged her to a duel over her position on health care, in part by calling him "unattractive".

Collins plans to reveal her decision at a meeting of local business leaders in the city of Rockland.

She would join a crowded field in the race for governor to replace two-term Republican Gov. Paul LePage, who can not run again because of term limits.

Among other assignments, Collins is a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, the panel leading the congressional Russian Federation investigations.
