President Trump Delivers Remarks to the 2017 Values Voter Summit

U.S. President Donald Trump speaks in Harrisburg Pennsylvania

In a new low, President Donald Trump becomes the first sitting president to address the Values Voter Summit, an annual gathering of anti-gay Christian extremists who aim "to preserve the bedrock values of traditional marriage, religious liberty, sanctity of life, and limited government that make our nation strong". Everyone here today is brought together by the same shared and timeless values. He said in America, 'We are all all every one of us made by the same god in heaven'. We honor the dignity of work.

"In protecting America's interests overseas, we will always support our cherished friend and partner, the State of Israel".

"In this administration, we will call evil by its name", Trump said. We treasure our freedom, we are proud of our history, we support the rule of law and the incredible men and women of law enforcement. "When America is unified, no force on Earth can break us apart".

"We have made great strides against ISIS - tremendous strides".

"We're confronting rogue regimes from Iran to North Korea and we are challenging the communist dictatorship of Cuba and the socialist oppression of Venezuela", Trump told the Values Voter summit, a conservative political conference.

Trump got acclaim for his recent criticism of NFL players who have kneeled during the national anthem in order to protest what they see as racial injustice in the country. And how times have changed. But you know what?

Trump, who has spent most of his life in socially progressive New York City, expressed liberal views about the LGBT community prior to his 2016 run, once saying he supported an amendment to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to include discrimination based on sexual orientation and noting that he "grew up in New York City, a town with different races, religions, and peoples". And something I've said so much during the last two years, but I'll say it again as we approach the end of the year.

Trump received a standing ovation when he talked of appointing Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court.

Religious freedom was major point in Trump's address, which was delivered to many evangelical Christians.

"We are stopping cold the attacks on Judeo-Christian values", he said.

"We will not allow government workers to censor sermons or target our pastors or our ministers or rabbis", the president said. "You know we're getting near that lovely Christmas season that people don't talk about anymore". "They don't use the word 'Christmas'". And it will be red, they'll have it painted, but they don't say it. "Well guess what, we're saying Merry Christmas again". 'And as a Christmas gift to all of our hard-working families, we hope Congress will pass massive tax cuts for the American people'.

"In the last 10 months we have followed through on one promise after another", Trump said.

And win them over he did - 80 percent of white evangelicals cast their vote for Trump last November, according to exit polls. The constituency is vital for Trump, whose approval has dipped even in red states such as Tennessee (-23 percentage points), MS (-21) and Kentucky (-20), according to a Morning Consult survey published this week. He opened his speech by mentioning the tragedy in Las Vegas and the need for prayer at this hard time.

But he mistakenly said he had spoken to "the president" of the Virgin Islands.
