United States bombers fly over Korean Peninsula in 1st night joint training drills

North Korea's intermediate-range strategic ballistic rocket Hwasong-12 lifting off from the launching pad at an undisclosed location near Pyongyang. North Korea has threatened to fire nuclear missiles at the United States and its allies

"North Korea wants this because their goal is to get the USA to back down and if Washington has to move away from its stated position of a denuclearized North Korea, then they will see that as a victory", said James Brown, an associate professor of worldwide relations at the Tokyo campus of Temple University.

On Saturday, a USA nuclear-powered Los Angeles-class attack submarine arrived in South Korea.

Two supersonic US bombers flew over the Korean Peninsula in their first nighttime training mission with South Korean forces, a clear warning to North Korea as tensions spike over its nuclear weapons program.

North Korea watchers have been on alert for a possible provocation by the communist state in the days surrounding a key holiday Tuesday to mark the founding anniversary of its ruling party.

"This drill was part of a routine deployment training aimed at enhancing deterrence" against the North's nuclear threats, the JCS said in a statement. "It is also consistent with the view of many other members of the worldwide community to lessen, reduce or completely diminish any diplomatic relationship with North Korea".

The ultimate aim, he said, would be "establishing a permanent peace regime on the Korean Peninsula".

Trump has responded with a series of bellicose statements, prompting a war of words with Pyongyang, which in turn has threatened to shoot US bombers out of the sky and fire missiles into the waters near Guam. Pyongyang belatedly responded by relocating some of its military aircraft to its east coast, the National Intelligence Service then said.

The Defense Ministry after an investigation said in May that North Korea was likely behind the hacking of the Defense Integrated Data Center in September a year ago, but had refused to confirm media speculation that the decapitation strike plan was compromised. No action by the North was observed during the 12-hour mission.

The United States has flown two supersonic heavy bombers over the Korean Peninsula in a show of force against Pyongyang, staging the first nighttime joint aviation exercises with Japan and South Korea.

The drills were conducted not long after Lee broke the news about the alleged cyberattacks to reporters.

Tensions over North Korea's weapons programme have soared in recent months with Pyongyang launching a flurry of missiles and conducting its sixth and most powerful nuclear test in defiance of multiple sets of United Nations sanctions.

Jimmy Carter, the 93-year-old former U.S. president, has reportedly indicated that he is willing to travel to Pyongyang to meet North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un in an effort to head off a military clash in Northeast Asia.

One defector from North Korea has said that the state's hacking capabilities are "beyond imagination". But Kim, the third generation of his family to rule, is officially revered in the North, and any suggestion of removing him from power is taken extremely seriously in Pyongyang.

According to one South Korean lawmaker, the country's hackers stole military plans developed by the US and South Korea previous year. North Korea routinely denies responsibility.

Last week, the North Korea propaganda web site Meari indicated operations have resumed at the Kaesong facility, and another propaganda web site, Uriminzokkiri posted a comment saying, "It is nobody's business what we do in an industrial complex where our nation's sovereignty is exercised".
