Wildfire erupts in Southern California

Smoke is seen from a vegetation fire that ignited in the Anaheim Hills area on Monday Oct. 9 2017

The blaze broke out during the fall's first major blast of Santa Ana winds.

Both fire fronts are unusual in that they are extremely close to populated areas, such as Santa Rose and Glen Ellen, in northern California, and Anaheim, in the east of Los Angeles.

A wildfire that has burned almost a dozen square miles among Southern California suburbs is still just five per cent contained and authorities say the thousands of people who evacuated will not be going home soon.

At least 10 people have been killed and at least 100 have been injured in the fires, and the death toll is expected to grow. The number may increase as the fire continues spreading and as assessments continue. Firefighters, he said, worked hard to protect his house and the others.

He called the estimates of destroyed structures very conservative.

The fire burning through the canyons in Orange County was one of many blazes to hit California on Monday (local time).

Firefighters hoped to take a more direct approach against the blaze, which could allow them to stop its advance, if conditions become more favorable Tuesday, he said. Authorities estimate there are 150 people missing in wine country.

Santiago Oaks Regional Park and Irvine Regional Park have been evacuated, and so has Yorba Regional Park so it can be used for firefighters, a county spokeswoman said.

"We have constant staffing", Bastman added, so there's no fear about limited resources, she said. Another shelter was set up at the downtown Anaheim Community Center, 250 E. Center Street.

15-hundred homes have been destroyed and states of emergency declared in counties north of San Francisco Bay. Based on available information, the affected areas include Orange County, Los Angeles, Anaheim, Anaheim Hills, & surrounding areas.

Residents describe terrifying middle-of-the-night scrambles to flee from raging wildfires. Fire officials estimate that at least six homes in the area have burned so far.

But mandatory evacuations remain in place. There was also no word on whether those campuses would reopen Tuesday, with the decision dependent on the fire fight.

Williams says she could feel the heat as trees turned into torches. Strong winds caused over a dozen fires, with almost 90,000 acres on fire.
