United Nations refugee agency alarmed by surge in fleeing Rohingya migrants

Bangladeshi people react as they look at the bodies of Rohingya Muslim refugees in Shah Porir Dwip Island

Almost half a million Rohingyas have fled to Bangladesh due to violence in the Rakhine state that has claimed lives of at least more than 100 people and displaced several others.

The boat sank near Shah Porir Dwip, on the southern tip of Bangladesh, said Lieutenant Colonel Ariful Islam, the local commander of Border Guard Bangladesh.

Rohingya refugees disembark from a boat after crossing the Naf river from Myanmar into Bangladesh in Whaikhyang on October 9, 2017. The dead included 10 children, an elderly woman and man.

It called on Myanmar to discuss repatriating refugees from neighbouring Bangladesh and praised the latter for its role in the crisis, which started when attacks by Rohingya militants on security posts brought a ferocious military response.

Washington D.C. [U.S.A], Oct.7 (ANI):The United States has expressed concern over the crackdown by the Myanmar government that has caused an exodus of half-a-million Rohingya Muslims to Bangladesh, saying this could attract global terrorists and destabilize the region.

Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has requested help from the United Kingdom and the worldwide community, to help resolve the Rohingya crisis.

Numerous people on the boat were children who were travelling away from Myanmar to escape violence, according to France 24. "And also we have mental health components, so by this mental health component we're going to cover 30,000 persons under these mental health services", said Muhammad Mehedi, field co-cordinator for Action Against Hunger.

Their wedding in Cox's Bazar was the first known one between a Bangladeshi and a Rohingya refugee since the August flare-up, the newspaper reported. Most recently, on September 28, a boat carrying about 80 refugees overturned. "We have no food and no guarantee of security", said a Rohingya resident of Hsin Hnin Pyar village on the south of the state's Buthidaung district.

The ceasefire is due to end at midnight on Monday, but the insurgents said in a statement they were ready to respond to any peace move by the government.

While a vaccine can provide life-saving protection against cholera, the World Health Organization says it does not replace other traditional control measures. Villagers, however, say that Rohingya are still attempting to leave and that many are gathered on the beaches just across the water from Bangladesh waiting for a chance to leave the country.

Those who have fled accuse the military, backed by Buddhist mobs, of using a brutal campaign of killings and village burnings to try to drive them out.
