NSUI members protest against fare hike at Vishwavidyalya Metro Station

Delhi Metro

The Centre's Narendra Modi government has told Delhi's Arvind Kejriwal government that it could consider reviewing hike in Metro fares if the latter agreed to pay over Rs 3,000 crore every year to DMRC.

It was clearly written in letter that as for government suggestion regarding a grant to the DMRC for meeting the gap in their finances, His government is willing to bear half the grant if only a matching grant is provided by the central government.

"The central and state governments are not meant to run metros in case of 50:50 joint venture metro projects like DMRC". So let an assessment over this to be made of the financial gap likely to be created on account of the postponement of the second fare hike and we will be able to bear half of it.

It claimed that metro ridership has come down 5% each in June and August, compared to the corresponding periods in 2016 and 2015, due to the first round of the fare hike, which came into effect in May.

Not only this, but Kejriwal also said that from the recent developments, it is evident that the relationship is not one of equal partners since what the Delhi Government proposals are often disposed by the Centre.

In response, Kejriwal said that his government was ready to pay Rs 1,500 crore a year, if the centre was ready to fund the other half.

He hoped that the spirit of partnership would continue to prevail and a mutually acceptable solution would be found. "Tampering with the recommendations of FFC is legally untenable", Union Minister Hardip Singh Puri was quoted as saying by the Times of India. "If only the representatives of the Central Government on the DMRC Board cooperate, the needful can be done", the letter read.

Metro fares are scheduled for another hike from Tuesday as earlier conveyed by the DMRC.

The revised fare structure will be is: up to 2 kms - Rs 10, 2-5 kms - Rs 20, 5-12 kms - Rs 30, 12-21 kms - Rs 40, 21-32 kms - Rs 50 and for journeys beyond 32 kms - Rs 60.

Singh is AAP's nominee on the DMRC Board.

On October 2, Kejriwal had called for an independent audit of the DMRC when he also asked for the fare revision to be put on hold till the exercise is completed.
