Several killed in Ghana capital gas explosions

Massive gas explosion at petrol station in Ghana sends residents fleeing

That explosion killed at least six fire service personnel at the scene, and injured at least another 80 people, according to Ghana's state news agency.

Police said the blasts happened in the Atomic Junction roundabout area of Legon, in northeast Accra, at about 7:30pm (19:30 GMT) on Saturday.

People were seen running to the safer place after the explosion happened.

The deputy information minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, said a "significant number of persons" were affected by the explosion and "a few" had died.

Ghana's capital was the scene of a similar fire and explosion at a petrol station in June 2015 which killed more than 150.

He added that the main blaze was largely under control and that the government planned to release casualty figures Sunday morning.

More than 20 vehicles are also reported to have been razed down by the explosion.

Ambulances had been deployed, and those injured have been sent to hospitals, he said.

Homes have been evacuated around the city.

A petrol station has exploded in Accra, the capital city of Ghana, at about 7:30pm yesterday.

"There was some panic and we all just moved away from the scene", George Agbey, who was near the explosion, told The Associated Press.

The latest incident sparked outrage among some Ghanaians on social media about the safety of filling stations, many of which are located near schools, hospitals and businesses.
