Man arrested, people injured after auto hits pedestrians in London

Man detained after people injured in collision near London Natural History Museum

The incident occurred around 2 p.m.in an area popular with tourists because of a cluster of museums.

Heavy police security has been deployed in the area and ambulances have reached to cater to the injured.

In a statement, the Met said: "Whilst enquiries continue it is believed a vehicle mounted the pavement and collided with a number of pedestrians".

The London Ambulance Service says it treated 11 patients, "mostly for leg and head injuries", and nine were hospitalized.

No one is believed to have life-threatening or life-changing injuries, and the majority were discharged by late Saturday.

A man arrested after a minicab crash sparked a terror alert in London's museum district has been released by police.

Both have since been determined to be unrelated to terrorism, but caused worry in the English capital, where there's heightened sensitivity following a number of recent terror attacks.

Many are believed to be injured in the incident but an official statement on this is awaited.

Oliver Cheshire, a model who is the fiancé of British pop singer Pixie Lott, told the Daily Mail newspaper he was one of those who had helped detain the man.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn tweeted: "Very concerning reports from outside the Natural History Museum. We are working w/ @metpoliceuk and will provide an update when we have more information".

Witnesses described a rush to leave the scene, nearby shops were evacuated and the sprawling museum, a favorite site for families with children, closed down early. Photographs showed a dented silver vehicle and a man being pinned to the ground outside the museum.

In a message on Twitter, the Prime Minister said: "My thanks to the first responders at this incident this afternoon and the actions of members of the public".

The current terror threat in the United Kingdom is at "severe" - the second highest level - meaning an attack is highly likely.

In March this year, a man ploughed into pedestrians with his auto on Westminster Bridge.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and the driver's possible motive.
