Late Salah goal fires Egypt to Russian Federation

Soccer Football- 2018 World Cup Qualifications – Africa- Egypt vs Uganda- Alexandria Egypt

Mohamed Salah scored from a penalty kick deep into injury time to send Egypt to the World Cup for the first time in 27 years after beating Republic of Congo 2-1 at home on Sunday.

The Pharaohs, who have not reached the World Cup finals since 1990, needed victory in Alexandria to guarantee their place next summer after Uganda and Ghana drew on Saturday.

They remain on top of the group with 12 points, gaining an unassailable four-point lead over Uganda.

Three more tickets are left to be picked by other African teams. Here's how much it means to Egyptian fans. "This is something you never witness in Egypt", said 23-year-old Gamal Mohamed in downtown Cairo's Tahrir Square, the iconic centre of the country's once-active protest movement, which has since been quashed by tough security measures.

Salah coolly sent the Congo keeper the wrong way to spark a night of celebrations across Egypt and end the record seven-time African champions' poor World Cup record.

The desperation to qualify ahead of the game was so great that Egypt's Argentinian coach Hector Cuper admitted he was taking medication for high blood pressure.

Egypt substitute Mahmoud Hassan was brought down in the box two minutes into injury time and Salah restored Egypt's lead from the spot, using his left foot to find the back of the net and clinch Egypt's place in Russian Federation next year.
