Iran warns U.S. against imposing new sanctions and 'terror' designation

Jafari rejected the idea of negotiating with Washington over regional issues and said if the USA designates the elite Revolutionary Guards Corps a terrorist group, it will in turn consider the USA military a terrorist group.

On Saturday, Iran's president defended the nuclear deal and said not even 10 Donald Trumps can roll back its benefits to Iran.

The head of the elite military unit also made a veiled threat to attack USA military bases in the region.

Speaking at the Revolutionary Guards Corps' strategic meeting in Tehran on Sunday, Commander Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari said the United States regional military bases would be at risk if further sanctions are passed.

Currently, US military bases are located in countries neighbouring Iran, less than 500 kilometres (310 miles) from Iran's borders. He also included the Islamic Republic in a list of "challenges we should've taken care of a long time ago", which features North Korea, Afghanistan, and IS.

Trump's administration earlier this year considered, but then put on hold, adding the IRGC to the United States list of foreign terrorist organizations.

The Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) are Iran's most powerful internal and external security force.

US President Donald Trump grudgingly signed the "Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act" on August 2 after the US Congress overwhelmingly approved the measure despite Trump's reservations about how it might affect his desire for improved relations with Moscow.

He said such moves by the US will eliminate "any chance for engagement forever".

Jafari's remarks came two days after US President Donald Trump claimed Iran "supports terrorism and exports violence, bloodshed, and chaos across the Middle East" and suggested it has "not lived up to the spirit of" the nuclear deal.

General Jafari further noted that if Americans are taking such measures in order to ultimately take Iran to the negotiating table on regional issues, they have chosen a totally wrong path.

The new Iran policy also follows reports that Trump will soon announce a decision to "de-certify" the landmark deal on Iran's nuclear program, opening the door for the re-implementation of crippling economic sanctions.
