Trump says U.S. must 'wipe out' Puerto Rico debt

US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump board Air Force One before departing for Puerto Rico Tuesday

Cruz donned the shirt during an interview with Jorge Ramos on Univision's "Al Punto" and said it was in response to remark's made by the president, who described her as "nasty" after she criticized him for failing to provide adequate relief following Hurricane Maria.

Trump spoke to Fox in San Juan, Puerto Rico, which he toured Tuesday.

"I think what you heard the president say is that Puerto Rico is going to have to figure out a way to solve its debt problem", Mulvaney said.

Trump added Cruz was "very complimentary only a few days ago", but "has now been told by the Democrats that you must be nasty to Trump".

After President Donald Trump said Puerto Rico's debt will be wiped out, White House officials rushed to rule out any us bailout of bondholders, who lent the commonwealth about $74 billion.

The US's southern neighbour plans to ship experts from its state-run power company to the island, where large numbers of people are without electricity, along with 30 tonnes of water and mosquito repellent. "We're a prideful people and to see our country get lost, it's bad", she said.

"I don't know if it's Goldman Sachs, but whoever it is, you can wave goodbye to that", Trump said in the interview, which aired late Tuesday.

The offer came on Wednesday, a day after President Donald Trump visited Puerto Rico.

"They owe a lot of money to your friends on Wall Street".

He could order the U.S. Justice Department to defend the 2016 federal law that Puerto Rico is trying to use to slash its debt and about $49 billion in pension obligations. Less than 25% of Puerto Rican debt is held by hedge funds, according to estimates by Cate Long, founder of research firm Puerto Rico Clearinghouse.

The President also memorably described Clinton as a "nasty woman" on the campaign trial past year. "And that's fine. We've saved a lot of lives", he told a gathering.

During last year's campaign, Trump suggested the US government could address its own debt problems by renegotiating its bonds and paying less than their face value, remarks that also raised alarms in the markets.

Before and during his visit Tuesday to Puerto Rico, Trump insisted the federal government had done "a great job" providing aid to the people and clearing roads so trucks can deliver food, water and other supplies to remote areas.

At a press conference Tuesday, Puerto Rico governor Governor Ricardo Rossello warned that millions of Puerto Ricans could leave the island and move to the USA mainland as a result of Maria. "Stop blaming Puerto Rico for the storm that devastated their shores, and roll up your sleeves and get the recovery on track". After mentioning the official Puerto Rican death toll of 16 and comparing it to the thousands that died during the "real catastrophe" of Hurricane Katrina, Trump told his Puerto Rican audience "You can be very proud". "If people of Puerto Rico had power and could watch TV, they might differ". "[Trump] said the Puerto Ricans just want everything done for them".
