Trump Tells Tillerson He's 'Wasting His Time' Negotiating With Kim

Trump Tillerson'wasting his time negotiating with North Korea

Tillerson expressed hope for reducing tensions with North Korea, which is fast advancing toward its goal of developing a nuclear-tipped missile capable of hitting the USA mainland.

Amid Secretary of State Rex Tillerson's direct diplomatic negotiations with North Korea this weekend, President Donald Trump tweeted doubt diplomacy with "Little Rocket Man" is anything more than a "waste of time".

Speaking on Saturday after a day of talks with President Xi Jinping and top diplomats, Tillerson said that U.S. officials are in touch with Pyongyang despite an escalating war of words between Trump and Kim and the imposition of US-led sanctions.

Even as Mr Tillerson met China's top diplomats, North Korea's state media produced a new barrage of insults.

That's a reference to leader Kim Jong Un. 'Save your energy Rex, we'll do what has to be done!' I think everyone would like for it to calm down. "We're not in a dark situation, a blackout, we have a couple, three channels open to Pyongyang".

In early August, Trump warned the USA would rain down "fire and fury" on North Korea, saying the United States would destroy the nation of some 25 million people if its dictator's threats against the U.S. and its allies continued.

The U.S. technically does not have official diplomatic relations with North Korea, but the U.S. State Department has communicated with North Korea's through its representatives at the United Nations (U.N.), according to the Associated Press. "The whole situation is a bit overheated right now", he said.

Tillerson expressed his hope that at the upcoming summit in Beijing, the relationship between the USA and China will be advanced. "That would calm things down a lot", Tillerson said.

"North Korea would be well advised to take this offer of talks seriously".

North Korea this year has been aggressively improving its missile and nuclear weapons programs, showcasing is abilities to the world through its continued tests.

He did not directly address the impact of Trump's own rhetoric.

In response to North Korea's continued weapons development this year, the UN Security Council agreed to increased sanctions on North Korea, gaining support from China and Russian Federation.
