Boris Johnson Challenges PM, Demands Short Brexit 'Transition Period'

Tory Party

The foreign secretary's latest comments on Brexit have put Theresa May under renewed pressure on the eve of the Tory party conference.

Ruth Davidson the Conservative Scottish leader said that "serious people" need to take charge of Brexit.

On Mr Johnson's interventions, Mr Gauke said: "I think it is for Boris to determine how much he wants to say".

She said: "Yes, we have to get the best Brexit deal - but we must also take action here at home to make this a fairer place to live for ordinary working people".

Liberal Democrat Brexit spokesman Tom Brake said: "If Theresa May is now too weak to slap down the ever more erratic Boris Johnson, it shows she has gone from being a lame-duck Prime Minister to a sitting-duck Prime Minister".

Outside the conference venue in Manchester, Corbyn's name was chanted by thousands of protesters who gathered to show their opposition to May's government and to Brexit.

He criticised key manifesto promises including the dementia tax, saying: "To drop something like that into a manifesto, launched without any sort of preparation of public opinion, was a mistake".

During her Brexit speech on the 22nd of September in Florence, Italy, Mrs. "People get up unbelievably early and they work unbelievably hard, they deserve to be properly paid".

Speaking at the Foreign Office launch of Institute for Free Trade think tank, Mr. Johnson demanded the two-year period announced by Theresa May last week be kept short so the United Kingdom can begin to finally strike its own free trade deals. "We left. We voted for that previous year, so let's get on with it".

He told ITV's Peston on Sunday: "The reality is that every serious person, every serious MP, every commentator knows she can't lead us into the next election".

As the party faithful converge on Manchester, the prime minister said Labour was "unfit to govern" as she pledged to listen to the concerns of young voters after the Tories lost their Commons majority in the snap general election in June. "Boris is absolutely behind the Florence speech and the line that we have taken".

As the weeks passed without a leadership challenge, her confidence has grown, and she now says she wants to fight the 2022 election as prime minister.

In May's favour so far has been the lack of a clear successor.

Johnson added: "Brexit is going to be great".

In the YouGov poll he came top of the list of possible successors to May, with 23 percent, while 56 percent described him as a good leader.
