Rohingya crisis: Myanmar cancels United Nations officials' planned visit to Rakhine state

Since then, nearly half a million refugees have poured across the border into Bangladesh, meaning that nearly half of the 1.2 million people living in Rakhine state have fled their homes and scores have been killed in little more than a month.

Around 120 Rohingya, many of them children, have drowned trying to reach Bangladesh in small fishing boats that coastguards say are woefully inadequate for the rough seas.

Some 480,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled Rakhine to Bangladesh since August 25.

An eminent Hindu group in the USA has expressed concern over reports that a mass grave containing the bodies of 28 Hindu villagers has been discovered in conflict-wreaked Myanmar's Rakhine state.

MP Varun Gandhi for urging the government to consider granting the refugee status to Rohingyas from Myanmar, Minister of State (MoS) for Home Affairs Hansraj Ahir on Tuesday said that a leader who thinks in the favour of the nation would not give such a statement.

Access to the area by relief agencies and global media has been heavily controlled by Myanmar's army and government.

Furthermore, the group said it expressed "its deepest sympathy for all victims of murder, persecution, war crime [sic], genocide, ethnic cleansing, or other crimes against humanity, irrespective of ethnic or religious background as perpetrated by the Burmese army and/or any other party to the conflict".

The state government will later form a committee to redistribute the land in accordance with the law he said.

Aid groups dismissed the accusations, which they said had inflamed anger towards them among Buddhists in the communally divided state, and called for an end to "misinformation and unfounded accusations".

But the military said it was only targeting militants. She also said any refugees verified as coming from Myanmar would be allowed to return.

The verification process, based on principles to which both Myanmar and Bangladesh agreed in 1993, will be carried out at Taungpyo Latwe village for those who return by road and at Naguya village for those who come back by waterways, agencies quoted the minister as saying.

Myanmar authorities do not recognize Rohingya as an indigenous ethnic group, instead regarding them as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.
