Iranian media ran clips of what it touted as a successful test launch, but analysts now say it was merely recycled footage of a test missile that blew up after flying 600 miles in a January launch.
When President Donald Trump tweeted on Saturday that Iran had "just test-fired" a missile, he seemed to know something the rest of the government did not. "They are also working with North Korea", Trump tweeted, adding "Not much of an agreement we have!"
Iran said on Saturday it had successfully tested a new ballistic missile with a range of 2,000 km (1,200 miles) and would keep developing its arsenal despite US pressure to stop.
Meanwhile, on September 20, President Hassan Rouhani of Iran delivered to the United Nations a plea to preserve the Iran nuclear deal while saying it was "not possible" to guarantee Israel security as long as it "usurped" Palestinian lands. When operational, such missiles can carry multiple warheads and have a range of 2,000 km.
The commander noted that trajectory of the missile did not include the Iranian airspace, but the high altitude it reached and the launch time made it visible to the naked eye in the Iranian cities of Birjand, Tabas, Yazd, Arak, Tehran and Shiraz.
The Khorramshahr was first displayed at a military parade on Friday, where President Hassan Rouhani said Iran would strengthen its missile capabilities.
"We can not let a murderous regime continue these destabilizing activities while building unsafe missiles, and we can not abide by an agreement if it provides cover for the eventual construction of a nuclear program", he continued.
"Extremely concerned by reports of Iran missile test, which is inconsistent with United Nations resolution 2231".
Foreign Ministry Director-General Yuval Rotem also warned that the Islamic Republic is "directly challenging the worldwide community", making "a robust response ... imperative", the Jewish Press reported.
"We never threaten anyone, but we do not tolerate threats from anyone", Rouhani had said, according to Fox News. He told the U.N. General Assembly last week that the accord was "nothing short of an embarrassment" and the "worst one-sided deal perhaps in American history".
Iran's defense minister said on Saturday foreign pressures would not affect Iran's missile program.
"I am not sure why the Iranians are lying about the range", said one US official.
