Google withdraws YouTube for Amazon Echo Show users

Amazon is Working on Smart Glasses That Supports AI Alexa

With both Amazon and Google working hard to secure the voice-controlled smart speaker and home hub market, it's no surprise that conflicts like this have started to erupt.

Alexa is also available for users of Amazon Echo, Echo Show, Amazon Fire TV, Echo Dot, Amazon Tap, Fire TV Stick, Fire Tablets, Amazon Fire TV, and Fire TV Edition.

Google, however, later explained that the move is due to the ongoing dispute between the two companies.

According to the statements published on The Verge, it looks like Amazon and Google are locking horns over how YouTube should work with Echo Show.

Though one could believe that Google is trying to sabotage its smart home competitor, that's likely more sensational than the actual issue.

The root issue is a long running spat between the technology giants after Google accused Amazon of "violating its terms of service" leading to a "broken user experience" which has yet to be resolved despite exhaustive negotiations. Finally Amazon showed off a new product, the Echo Spot, which is a tiny Echo speaker with a 2.5 inch display. It was "disappointing", Amazon said, arguing that it hurts both companies' customers.

While the Echo Show could play videos from YouTube, it did not provide all of YouTube's functions such as the ability to subscribe to channels or serve up video recommendations. Until Tuesday, it also let you pull up YouTube videos. I'm not saying there's any likelihood these things will happen, but one company pulling a plug could have seriously frustrating ramifications for users. Amazon's media apps are for instance not compatible with Google's Chromecast streaming device, and the Amazon Video app isn't distributed on Google's Play Store.

There was no mention by either Amazon or Google at the time that YouTube's video experience was "broken".

Despite government scrutiny, Google continues to block Microsoft from offering its customers proper access to YouTube.

Amazon said YouTube was blocked without notice or explanation.

Amazon's take is that Google has been a bit naughty and switched off support without warning which, naturally, would cause disruption and unrest among users, and a new headache for Amazon.
