Longest surviving terrorist killed in Kashmir

Uri (Jammu and Kashmir), September 26: The Indian Army on Tuesday gunned down Lashkar e- Islam Chief Abdul Qayoom Najar in an encounter near Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir's Uri sector.

Officials said that Najar, who figured in the list of most wanted terrorists, was killed as the Army and other security forces foiled an infiltration bid along the LoC in Uri. Qayoom was a resident of Sopore area of Baramulla district and was one of the longest surviving Kashmiri terrorist commanders carrying a bounty of Rs 10 lakh.

He had gone to Pakistan after he agreed to truce with Hizbul in 2015-16.

The police, in a statement, termed it "a very significant achievement".

Earlier, Police had announced a reward of Rs 10 lakhs for information leading to the arrest of Najar. He was arrested in 1992 and later released.

Najar, according to police sources, is believed to have executed Abdul Majid Dar, ex-chief commander of HM after the later entered into peace talks with the govt of India. He later formed his own outfit, Lashkar-e-Islam, which carried out a series of attacks on mobile towers and killed several people, including a Hurriyat activist, for alleged links with the security forces. After his release, he plunged into militancy again in 1995.

Najar, 39, had been an active part of terrorist operations since 1999. Security agencies were convinced that these killings and attacks are the handiwork of Qayoom and his associate Imtiyaz Kundoo.

The officials say that Najar didn't like intervention from Hurriyat leaders in militancy as he felt his writ was being challenged by the separatist leadership.
