Federal government notifies 21 states of election hacking

State’s top election official confirms Russia attempted to meddle with Alabama’s voting systems

Wisconsin, a key state in the 2016 USA presidential election, said on Friday it was one of the 21 states that the federal government notified were targeted by Russian government hackers but no votes were changed. In most cases, they had not known until notified Friday by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Wyman says the state had security measures in place that detected the attempted intrusion.

Over the summer, DHS told Congress that 21 states' elections systems were targeted by hackers linked to the Russian government.

The agency is calling all 50 states to let them know whether their systems were compromised.

"Colorado is considered by DHS to be on that list of 21 states that were impacted".

Haas says security provided by the state successfully protected Wisconsin's systems.

Wyman says the notice from the federal agency "confirmed information her office previously shared with federal security officials past year", according to the release.

The National Association of Secretaries of States, which represents most senior state election officials, says it's relieved Friday's calls were finally made.

Washington state was not hit in that effort, which involved a private corporation that provided election services for some states, the Secretary of State's Office has said.

The office earlier has said it had no knowledge of its election systems being targeted. Kolasky says he expects the first security clearances to be approved next month.
