Aung San Suu Kyi's Key Speech On Myanmar Rohingya Crisis Today

The Centre said some Rohingyas were indulging in illegal /anti national activities i.e. mobilisation of funds through hundi hawala channels procuring fake Indian identities for other Rohingyas and also indulging in human trafficking

"We are horrified to see that Myanmar authorities are laying landmines along their stretch of the borders", she said, calling on the neighboring country's government to allow the Rohingya to be repatriated free of fear of persecution.

China has also stood by the Myanmar government.

But they said the two communities now lived in harmony and blamed outsiders for the violence.

The Myanmar government does not use the term "Rohingya" and does not recognise the people as an official ethnicity, which means they are denied citizenship and effectively rendered stateless.

The growing crisis threatens Myanmar's diplomatic relations, particularly with Muslim-majority countries in Southeast Asia where there is profound public anger over the treatment of the Rohingya.

In a 16-page affidavit, the Centre held that the current influx of illegal Rohingya immigrants into India was a "potential threat to internal and national security" and in such a situation the Central government would take a policy decision based on several parameters, diplomatic considerations and potential dangers to the nation.

Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslims have fled their homes in Myanmar after being targeted in what a United Nations official called a "textbook example of ethnic cleansing".

Foreign aid groups said that made them a target of local hostility-and many have reined in or stopped their operations for safety reasons.

Hindus make up a small but long-standing minority in both Myanmar and Bangladesh.

An article by Mizanur Rahman from The Daily Star, titled, "Rohingya crisis: Politics of denial", states that Senior General Than Shwe, "Declared that the Western concept of human rights and freedom is not compatible with the culture and tradition of Myanmar".

The card listed his race as "Indian" and religion as "Hindu".

The Rohingya are considered to be among the world's most persecuted people.

"I would like you all to come to Bangladesh and hear from them about the atrocities in Myanmar", she said.

"Our village in Myanmar was surrounded by hundreds of men in black masks on the morning of August 25", said Veena Sheel, a mother-of-two whose husband works in Malaysia.

Still, there was an impressive line up of eminent lawyers present in the SC who appeared for the Rohingya refugees and against their deportation. "No peace here, no peace back in Myanmar", said Sheel. At first, Bangladesh also refused to take them, saying they were Burmese. Myanmar national security adviser Thaung Tun told Reuters on Monday that Myanmar would ensure those who left their homes could return, but there was "a process we have to discuss".

Aree Arif, a coordinator with the Sheikul Islam Office's Council for Humanitarian Networking told Efe news on Wednesday that a team is preparing to travel to Cox's Bazar next week to supply aid kits to the Rohingya refugees living in overcrowded camps in the city.

In an e-mail reply to The New Indian Express, the UNHCR's India headquarters in New Delhi said: "The principle of non-refoulement is considered part of customary global law and therefore binding on all states whether they have signed the Refugee Convention or not".

"On the strength of the evidence presented, the tribunal reached the consensus ruling that the State of Myanmar has the intent to commit genocide against the Kachin people and the other Muslim groups".
