Advanced stages of CTE found in Aaron Hernandez's brain

Aaron Hernandez Found To Have Had CTE

For those who don't know, CTE stand for Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, which is a progressive degenerative brain disease found in those with repeated brain trauma, usually athletes.

Baez is claiming that researchers are calling it the most severe case of CTE ever discovered in a person of Hernandez's age.

One day after a lawyer for former Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez said an autopsy for his client revealed "severe" CTE damage to his brain, Belichick sidestepped questions about one of the biggest threats to the future of football. Hernandez is one of several players who have been found to have had CTE after committing suicide, a list that includes Junior Seau, Jovan Belcher and Andre Waters.

"The neurodegenerative brain disease has Alzheimer's-like symptoms, including memory loss, confusion, aggression, rage and, at times, suicidal behaviour", CNN reports.

"We are grateful to the family of Aaron Hernandez for donating his brain to the VA-BU-CLF brain bank", the Boston University CTE Center said in a statement.

Hernandez infamously killed himself in his prison cell on April 19th - after he was found not guilty in a double homicide.

In three seasons with the Patriots, Hernandez joined Rob Gronkowski to form one of the most potent tight end duos in National Football League history.

"While we still maintain that he was innocent [of the murders], the CTE can explain a lot of his behavior", Baez says. The Boston University CTE Center test determined Hernandez had Stage 3 CTE, with Stage 4 being the highest.

Bill Belichick handles the football side of the Patriots operation, and he doesn't intend to wade into the medical and legal questions raised in a suit filed against the franchise by Aaron Hernandez's legal team now. The league won't admit that the game is unsafe and it has already forked over $1 billion in a separate settlement with families of players who suffered brain damage.
