Hindus fleeing Myanmar violence hope for shelter in Modi's India

Bangladesh sprawling camps

"Should this happen, Malaysia and neighbouring countries would bear the brunt of serious instability to the region", he said during the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Contact Group's session on the Rohingya Muslim Minority in Myanmar, held at the UN General Assembly Building, New York, yesterday.

"We are not violating any global law by deporting Rohingyas back because we have not signed United Nations convention", Rajnath Singh was quoted to have said.

A military crackdown in northern Rakhine launched in retaliation for attacks by Rohingya militants last month has sent more than 410,000 members of the ethnic minority fleeing Myanmar to neighboring Bangladesh.

Haque said Bangladesh has already been hosting 32,000 registered Rohingya refugees, with most living in two official camps in Cox's Bazar.

The United States is providing an additional almost $32 million in humanitarian assistance to address the urgent needs of Rohingya fleeing violence from Rakhine State, Burma to Bangladesh, as well as internally displaced persons in Rakhine State, and host communities in Bangladesh.

The insurgent attacks against the Myanmarese police and military forces in the state of Rakhine on August 25 caused a massive number of residents to flee to Bangladesh, mostly of them Rohingya, a Muslim minority group in Myanmar where the majority of the population is Buddhist.

Rohingya, who are predominantly Muslim, are reviled by many in Buddhist-majority Myanmar.

Eight people were detained and several police were injured before order was restored late at night.

"We must ensure that the ancestors' land of the Rohingya is restored", he said.

Since 2012, more than 1,000 Rohingya have been killed, some 320,000 live in squalid camps in Myanmar and neighboring Bangladesh, and thousands have embarked on perilous sea voyages to other Southeast Asian countries, according to estimates by the US -based Human Rights Watch and the United Nations.

The crisis has drawn worldwide condemnation and US President Donald Trump called on Wednesday for a quick end to the violence.

But refugees in Bangladesh who were aware of her comments took no comfort from that, anticipating little change to policies that have denied their community recognition as a distinct ethnic group and citizenship.

The United States said on Wednesday it would provide an additional $32 million in humanitarian assistance, bringing its total assistance in 2017 to $95 million. Aung San Suu Kyi and the Burmese government need to make it very clear that the military action should stop.

Ms Suu Kyi did not address that accusation but said her government condemned rights violations and anyone responsible for abuses would face the law.
