Gundogan injury not serious as Man City breathe sigh of relief

West Bromwich Albion vs Manchester City Preview Citizens facing Pulis challenge

Manchester City's German midfielder Ilkay Gundogan receives treatment after picking up an injury during the English League Cup third round football match between West Bromwich Albion and Manchester City at The Hawthorns in West Bromwich, central England September 20, 2017.

Gundogan returned to training and made his first appearance when he came on as a substitute in City's 6-0 win over Watford on 16 September.

The Germany global started his first game for eight months in the 2-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion following a cruciate knee ligament injury, but departed the field after a rough challenge from Baggies star Claudio Yacob just shy of the hour mark.

Yet their failure to kill off Tony Pulis's men looked set to land them with extra-time when Claudio Yacob equalised with 18 minutes to go and Albion even missed chances to sneak ahead.

But City's night was tarnished after Ilkay Gundogan limped off on his first start since December following a serious knee injury. "Unfortunately the [foul] is tough".

'I suffered for Gundogan, when he was on the grass, in that moment, ' Pep Guardiola said.

"Tomorrow [Thursday], he will take a test to see exactly what it is".

He was forced off following a tackle from Yacob which left boss Guardiola upset on the touchline. I still don't know if that was a good thing.

"He's okay. I spoke with him, he has a little pain in his knee".

In a statement on their website on Thursday, City diagnosed the problem as a sprain, meaning the 26-year-old could soon be back in action. The most interesting thing was the camera coming out of the knee: "I could see the screw". "You can't imagine, for eight months, to be fighting every day alone".
