Rohingya refugees are a threat to national security, Centre tells Supreme Court

Rohingya Rohingya muslim Rohingya flee border myanmar bangladesh Rohingya kiren rijiju Rohingya refugee indian express opinion

Reacting on the ongoing Rohingya crisis, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Friday said that India had already given space to the refugees of 23 countries and so, others shouldn't moralise the situation. This comes two days after United Nations Human Rights Chief Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein described attempts by India to deport illegal Rohingya refugees to Myanmar as "deplorable".

"This chorus of branding India as villain on Rohingya issue is a calibrated design to tarnish India's image".

State CPI (ML) secretary Kunal said here that that the "Centre's support to military action against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar was very painful and condemnable". "It undermines India's security", Rijiju said in a tweet on Wednesday.

India is not a state party to the 1951 Refugee Convention or the 1967 Protocol relating to the status of refugees although it hosts thousands of refugees from neighboring countries.

"Rohingya Muslims are threat to National Security", government told Supreme Court today, reported CNN News 18.

The lawyer declined to be named because an affidavit the home ministry is preparing to file with the court has not yet been finalized.

Since the military crackdown began, at least 30,000 Rohingya people have been killed, while almost 400,000 forced out of their homeland and flee to Bangladesh as entire villages were burnt down, according to the UNHCR. The report also stated that the government claimed that the policy decision to expel Rohingya refugees from India is based upon objective factors and should not be tinkered with.

"If they stay here permanently, who will protect the citizens?" he asked.

In an alleged copy of the affidavit from the Indian Home Ministry leaked on Thursday, the Rohingya Muslims are called a "serious threat to national security" who must be deported in the interest of the nation.

Mr Kunal said that human rights bodies had also condemned Myanmarese government on several occasions for persecution of Rohingya Muslims in the country. He said that it is in the process of being finalised.

The Supreme Court had asked the government to file the affidavit on a plea against the deportation of illegal Rohingya Muslim immigrants to Myanmar.

Myanmar's Army launched a crackdown in response to attacks by Rohingya militants on August 25.

Meanwhile, India on Thursday rushed 53 tonnes of relief materials to Bangladesh and pledged all help to Dhaka in tackling the humanitarian crisis after almost 400,000 Rohingya Muslim refugees fled to the country from Myanmar following the ethnic violence in the Buddhist-majority nation. "When it was told that they (Lankan refugees) are taking part in terror, what was done?"
