Military options against N.Korea effective, overwhelming

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said Friday that if diplomacy fails on North Korea, she has no problem letting Secretary of Defense James Mattis take the fight to Pyongyang.

The United Nations reacted strongly after North Korea tested a weapon analysts say has the explosive power of 250 kilotons of TNT, passing the new sanctions on September 11.

Trump's remarks came after North Korea fired a ballistic missile over the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido earlier on Friday, the latest in a stream of missile tests that have looked to defy the global community.

The new U.N. Security Council sanctions cut 55 percent of the refined petroleum products going to North Korea, and fully ban all joint ventures with the country.

H.R. McMaster spoke about North Korea Friday during a White House briefing about the upcoming U.N. General Assembly meeting next week.

"What we are seeing is they continue to be provocative, they continue to be reckless".

But he said that while the United States did have a "military option", it was not the preferred route, adding that the United States is keen to work with allies on measures "short of war". He calls on all nations to enforce them and do everything they can to address the threat and prevent war.

In a statement, the Security Council said the launch was carried out just three weeks after a first missile overflew Japan and less than two weeks after Pyongyang's sixth and biggest nuclear test.

The Security Council scheduled an emergency closed-door meeting Friday afternoon in NY.

Haley repeatedly said the latest package of North Korea sanctions unanimously passed by the Security Council is significant, calling it a "massive sanctions package".

Having said that, I have no problem kicking it to Gen. Mattis because I think he has plenty of options.

Those options are "not only effective but overwhelming", Trump added for his part, after reviewing a military base near Washington.
