Record number of terrorism arrests made in United Kingdom in past year

More people are reporting suspicious people to Prevent

The number of people detained in Britain on suspicion of terrorism offences in the 12 months ending 30 June 2017 is up by 68% on the previous year, the Home Office says.

They also include many arrests related to British jihadis attempting to travel to or returning from fighting for ISIS in the Middle East, or for spreading the terror group's propaganda.

Of these 379 terror-related arrests over the a year ago, 12 were made in connection with the Westminster attack, 23 related to the Manchester Arena bombing and 21 arrests were related to the attack some time later at London Bridge.

Neil Basu, deputy assistant commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, said: "While the terrorist threat has increased in recent months, so has our activity, reflected by this significant increase in arrests". It is the highest numbers of arrests since the government started keeping tallies in 2001.

The graph above quotes statistics from the National Counter Terrorism Police Operations Centre, a branch from the National Police Chiefs' Council.

Of the 379 people arrested, just one third were charged with a crime, with the rest being set free or released on bail. As such the data leaves open the possibility that some suspects were arrested multiple times. Meanwhile, 189 were released without charge.

It also includes the one arrest made after the auto attack near Finsbury Park Mosque.

The United Kingdom has suffered a series of terror attacks this year.

The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attacks in Westminster, Manchester, and London Bridge. The Home Office said 91% of those prisoners held extreme Islamist views, while a further 5% had far-right ideologies. Hundreds of Facebook users hailed Cardiff man Darren Osborne as a "true hero" and "patriot" after he drove a van into pedestrians by the Finsbury Park Mosque, the Independent reported.
