Rohingya crisis: India asks Myanmar to handle situation with restraint

Civil society protests against Rohingyas genocide in Myanmar

The United Nations (UN) says almost 300,000 Rohingya refugees have arrived in Bangladesh since attacks by Rohingya militants on Myanmar security forces in the violence-racked Rakhine state on August 25 sparked a major military backlash.

Tens of thousands more are believed to be on the move inside Rakhine, fleeing burning villages, the army and ethnic Rakhine mobs - who Rohingya refugees accuse of attacking civilians - only to become stranded in hills without food, water, shelter or medical care.

The fires were blazing in the ethnically mixed Rathedaung township, where populations of Rohingya Muslims and Rakhine Buddhists live side by side.

Almost 300,000 Rohingya have fled to Bangladesh since August 25, when a Rohingya insurgent group attacked police posts and security forces retaliated.

"The Indian government should put a stay on the order passed to deport the Rohingyas muslims", said Das.

Rohingya militants, known as Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army, or ARSA, issued a statement Saturday, saying "offensive military operations" would be paused until October 9 to give access to aid groups.

Last year Pakistan had taken up the case of Rohingya Muslims when Ambassador Maleeha Lodhi told an OIC meeting at the United Nations that, "the worldwide community as a whole, and the OIC in particular, has to come together and play its due role for timely, effective and eventually a permanent solution to this problem".

"They pushed them into a room, locked it from outside and set the house on fire".

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Sunday condemned Myanmar for "systematic brutal acts" against its Muslim Rohingya minority and asked it to accept global monitors.

Bakkar said he and three of his relatives survived because they were outside when the attack occurred. Many collapsed on the beach from motion sickness and dehydration.

But detractors say Suu Kyi is one of the few people with the mass appeal and moral authority in Myanmar to swim against the tide on the issue.

While Burmese Buddhists in Myanmar also worship the Buddha, they follow a different religious tradition than Tibetans and do not recognize the Dalai Lama as their spiritual leader. But none had been planted recently.

Reporters from Associated Press on the Bangladesh side of the border said they had seen an elderly woman with devastating leg wounds: one leg with the calf apparently blown off and the other also badly injured.
