Gareth Bale reveals why he didn't move to Manchester United

Signing Gareth Bale from Real Madrid is 'over'-Jose Mourinho

It will be the first time Bale has faced the club he left in a world-record £86m deal in 2013 in a competitive environment, although it will be in an unfamiliar environment, with Tottenham now playing home games at Wembley rather than White Hart Lane.

"I'm a different player of course I am", Bale added.

"It feels like I got on the football ladder and kept climbing".

Bale came off the bench and missed two clear chances against Levante, doing little to ease the scrutiny he now finds himself under.

During the summer transfer window, United manager Jose Mourinho admitted that he wanted to sign the 28-year-old, but Bale has suggested that he is content not moving to Old Trafford to become the main man.

"But I think the main thing, when you look back on your career, is that you look at your trophies". But, it's also true that there's constant pressure on the Real stars to perform week in, week out. And yes, now I think I should have taken more time to recover so I could have played much better when I returned and be able to do all those things with the ankle which I wasn't able to. I want to do well for myself but I also want to try to help the team and win trophies.

It is something he says he has spoken about with Real colleague Luka Modric, a player with whom he enjoyed playing so much it actually influenced his decision to move to Real a year after the Croatian had made the same move.

"I just want to go out on to the football pitch and enjoy my football". "I've had some great moments, and others not so much".

Having struggled with an ankle injury, Bale was eager to play a part for Zinedine Zidane's side towards the end of the campaign and did just that as he featured as a substitute in the Champions League final victory over Juventus in Cardiff. I love the club and still keep in touch with a lot of people there and the fans were incredible.

The Wales legend told Sky Sports: "You look at the current Manchester United team and you wonder if they can they win the Champions League?".
