Miss North Dakota Is the New Miss America

New in this year’s Miss America pageant a second round of onstage interview questioning for finalists

An Ivy League graduate and national dance champion from North Dakota was crowned Miss America on Sunday, becoming the first contestant from the state to win the almost 100-year-old contest.

During the competition, Cara was asked a tricky question about U.S. president Donald Trump withdrawing the United States from the Paris climate deal. Her dream is to be the first female governor of North Dakota. She said she believed leaving the agreement was the wrong decision.

Following the pageant's tradition, the panel of judges asked contestants some tough questions, and this year they were mostly political - thanks to the politically-charged climate in Trump's America.

Trump had not mentioned Mund or her comment on the Paris accord on Twitter as of early Monday morning.

"It's important to have a woman's perspective", Cara told AP. By the time she advanced to the Q&A portion and was asked about the No. 1 item on her bucket list, Mund reiterated it once again.

"We should investigate it to its fullest extent, and if we do find evidence, the justice system should do their due diligence", she said.

"It was very obvious that it was a terrorist attack", Wood said. And that's something that we really need to keep in mind. 'In health care and on reproductive rights, it's predominantly men making those decisions'.

Up first for the second question round was Miss Louisiana, followed by Miss New Jersey, Miss District of Columbia, Miss North Dakota, Miss Missouri, Miss Alabama and Miss Texas.

But she expressed concern and support for friends and strangers endangered by Hurricane Irma, which was tearing its way up the Florida gulf coast on Sunday.

Miss Alaska, Angela Klapperich, 23, who hails from Wasilla, the same town where Sarah Palin was mayor (she was also Miss Wasilla), ventured onto the Boardwalk, sans makeup, to wish Mund well.

Upon accepting the crown, Shields will take on a year of responsibilities in addition to a ton of wonderful perks. Briana Kinsey from District of Columbia bagged the 3rd Runner-Up slot, and Miss Texas Margana Wood won 4th Runner-Up.
