Horror movie 'It' scores record-breaking opening weekend

These scenes are very well-done and the picture - overall - is quite impressive as a horror film (as hard to create as a successful modern-day comedy).

The new film is directed by Andy Muschietti, who also helmed 2013's horror movie Mama, and topped the United Kingdom box office following its opening weekend with £9,884,000 across 604 cinemas, film studio Warner Bros said.

The biggest box office competition on the horizon for "It" is the Michael Keaton thriller "American Assassin" opening Friday as well as "Kingsman: The Golden Circle" and "The LEGO Ninjago Movie" opening September 22.

And at the specialty box office, Charlie Sheen's new drama 9/11 fell REALLY flat, drawing just $162,450 from 400 theaters - which equates out to a brutal average of $406 per location. Finally, IT is second for all R-rated movie launches, behingd Deadpool, which opened in 2016 with $132.4 million.

From its website entry, Rotten Tomatoes describes the New Line Cinema's horror thriller "It", directed by Andy Muschietti ("Mama"), as based on the hugely popular Stephen King novel of the same name, has been "terrifying readers for decades". Saturday dipped only 10% to $45.7M which is a great hold for a horror movie that generated so much business upfront with pre-shows. Coming in at third was Hitman's Bodyguard, which fell to third place this weekend. A tidily made horror movie with an imaginative director, made for $35 million, can take in $123 million in a single weekend in September. Wind River dropped 49% to an estimated $3.2M while the toon Leap! fell 48% to an estimated $2.5M. Warner Bros. expects an additional $62 million from overseas markets, shooting the total revenue near $180 million.

These numbers are utterly insane, and prove that it doesn't matter when in the year a film is released, in terms of generating record grosses-all that matters is that audiences actually want to see it. The worldwide sum hit $495.3M while the global gross rose to $823M passing the $816.3M of Wonder Woman in the process. Reviews were not very good and the B grade from CinemaScore indicates only medium satisfaction from customers.

The movie adapts only part of the 1,000-plus page book, in which its main characters are children.
