Texas Task Force 1 demobilizes from Harvey, members return home

Michigan Task Force sends crew to assist in Hurricane Irma response

VA-TF2 has been providing a variety of services to help those affected by Irma in the Caribbean and is one of several FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Teams located across the nation. Part of the team that handles hazmat situations was diverted to Alabama to prepare.

But 30 minutes after their arrival, there is another disaster call, this time, to send a much larger team to Florida to respond to Hurricane Irma.

Mutual aid requests from Florida began this week in preparation of the storm, which is expected to hit landfall early Sunday morning as a Category 4 hurricane.

Scott Sladek, who helps oversee Task Force One, says 41 more are joining them in Georgia, where they'll wait for more orders. "They were more than understanding", said Adam Christ, Inland's general manager.

"We were called out on the 24th of August", Captain Kevin Ganger of the Piqua Fire Department said. After a short break home with family and making needed equipment repairs, they are back on the road.

The team got word Thursday evening to "leave immediately", said Lincoln Fire Chief Michael Despain.

More members from Missouri Task Force.

Another 17 members of Lincoln's fire department will join the team for this deployment, but didn't go to Texas.

Lincoln firefighter Mike Wright said he's ready.

Over the next few hours, team members will begin arriving and loading almost 60,000 pounds of gear onto semis, which will be driven out to Florida to meet the team.

Brian McNoldy, a hurricane researcher at the University of Miami, said Irma could easily prove to be the costliest storm in US history.

"Anything and everything is up for discussion", Thavenet said.
