Paterno admitted to hearing earlier complaint about Sandusky sexual abuse

Joe Paterno

Joe Paterno said he knew about abuse claims against convicted child abuser Jerry Sandusky prior to former Penn State assistant coach Mike McQueary's 2001 claim that he witnessed Sandusky assault a boy on campus, according to a CNN report.

Joe Paterno knew years before Jerry Sandusky's arrest that the former assistant Penn State football coach might be sexually abusing children.

The police report, CNN says, "lays out an account from whistleblower Mike McQueary, who reported to Paterno an incident he had just witnessed in a locker room between Sandusky and a young boy".

According to the report, when McQueary recounted what he had seen, Paterno acknowledged it "was the second complaint of this nature he had received".

He was never charged with a crime, although unsealed depositions by alleged victims said Paterno knew of the abuse as far back as 1976. In July 2013, McQueary testified about that same moment, saying Paterno "slumped back in his chair", was "significantly saddened", and even "dropped his eyes a little bit".

This July, Curley, Schultz and former Penn State president Graham Spanier were sentenced to at least two months in jail each after being convicted of child endangerment.

Paterno coached Penn State for 45 years before his contract was terminated in November 2011. Sandusky is in jail and is now appealing the court's ruling.

Paterno went to Penn State heads and nothing really happened for nearly a decade before a Grand Jury investigation finally took place which then resulted in Sandusky being convicted.

Paterno died in January 2012.

Attorney's for the Paterno family could not be reached for comment by CNN.

Also in his 2013 testimony, McQueary said Paterno in the years after 2001 made passing remarks about how Sandusky "was a sick guy" and said the university "screwed up" in its handling of the 2001 allegation.

The latest police report casts fresh doubt on denials by Paterno, his family and his supporters that the head coach knew about Sandusky's predatory serial molestation before the 2001 incident. "With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more".
