Man Gives Last Generator to a Stranger Amid Prep for Hurricane Irma

Man gives up last generator at Lowe's to woman in need before Hurricane Irma hits

Pam Brekke searched Orlando stores for a generator to help her father only to find empty shelves.

Her father has a medical condition and depends on oxygen.

Yet as she was standing in line, she watched as the last generator was sold to the customer in front of her.

"My father's on oxygen, and I'm anxious about this storm", Brekke told WFTV through tears, adding that she has spent days trying to buy a generator.

As luck would have it, when it was Brekke's turn to claim a generator, she learned there were no more to be bought, that she had missed out by just one customer.

"I'm very overwhelmed by that man", Brekke said, again fighting back tears. "No worry for them".

Despite a language barrier, Brekke was able to thank Santiago and the two shared a hug. She said she experienced the hurricanes of 2004 and knew what was coming.

"She need the generator - it's ok She need it", said Santiago.

"That's a lovely man right there", she said.

As a follow-up, the station that covered the story initially - WFTV-TV - took it upon themselves to make sure Santiago got a generator himself. "He's helping our family".

However after Alvarez spoke with the managers at the Lowe's store, they made a plan and she and Santiago later returned to the store where she presented him with his own generator - for free.
