Kevin Anderson hugs it out after reaching US Open final

Kevin Anderson celebrates after defeating Pablo Carreno Busta in their men's singles semi-final match in the US Open

Even though he co-opted a practice normally reserved for the victor of a Grand Slam final, Anderson had made a most unlikely run to reach this U.S. Open final.

Pablo Carreno Busta has backed Kevin Anderson to win the US Open if he plays his best stuff against Rafael Nadal, although he admitted his compatriot is the clear favourite.

The No. 12-seeded Carreno Busta had won his first 16 sets in the tournament before the 28th-seeded Anderson started finding the range on his power shots late in the second set, capitalizing when Carreno Busta double-faulted to give him set point trailing 5-6.

The 31-year-old Anderson, at 32 in the world, will become the will become the lowest-ranked man to play for the US Open title since the ATP rankings first began back in 1973.

The 6-foot-8 Anderson will face the victor between No. 1 Rafael Nadal and No. 24 Juan Martin del Potro in Sunday's championship at 4 p.m. ET.

A 20th ace sealed the set and when Carreno Busta steered a forehand into the tramlines to fall a break down in the fourth, it just left Anderson to serve his way into the final. A bullet-like backhand victor sealed the second set for the South African, leveling the match at one set all.

With Hollywood star Robert Redford and Microsoft founder Bill Gates looking on, the big South African carved out the first break of the second set for 3-1 but handed it back straightaway in the next game.

Kevin Anderson has taken control of his U.S. Open semifinal against Pablo Carreno Busta, winning the last two sets.

Carreno Busta displayed great resilience to save two break points at 4-3 down, but Anderson's persistence paid off in the final game of the set as he broke courtesy of angled backhand. Their only other clash was in 2013 on Casablanca clay, which Anderson won 6-3, 6-3. But at the same time, I think I played a solid match. It was an unbelievably tough match for me.

"Here I am just nine months after thinking I might have to undergo a year's worth of recovery for surgery". Although he holds a 0-4 head-to-head record against Nadal, the South African will be looking to continue his incredible run and cause a huge upset in the final. Anderson finished it off on the next point.

"It will be an interesting match, and I'm very excited to go out there and compete in the semifinals". In fact, he is the only one of the four men's semifinalists to not have dropped a set so far.

"It was very hard at the end of past year", he said.

"Ultimately, such a sacrifice would compromise my results and any hope of competitive representation for South Africa at Grand Slam tournaments". Del Potro was the U.S. Open champion in 2009, when he beat Nadal in the semifinals and Roger Federer in the final. You know, his serve, he's been serving very well, it looks like.
