Venus Williams still grabbing opportunities at US Open

Venus Williams defeated Carla Suarez Navarro in round four at the US Open

Venus Williams rolled back the years to knock out Petra Kvitova and set up a U.S. Open semi-final clash with unseeded compatriot Sloane Stephens on Tuesday, remaining on track for a place in her third grand slam final of 2017.

Williams dropped serve in the third game of the first set after making three double faults, but from 1-3 down the American won five games in a row as Kvitova struggled to find her timing.

Kvitova admitted to nerves in the final game, where she had to save three break points, roaring herself to victory. "No one ever gives you a slam".

Petra Kvitova hopes expectations will ease after her "amazing" run to the US Open semi-finals. Last December, an intruder attacked and robbed her in her own apartment in the Czech Republic. Her only other Major triumph has been at the US Open.

"What she's gone through is unimaginable, unreasonable", Williams said.

But in New York, Kvitova's game is beginning to live up to the heartwarming comeback story many predicted she would script at Wimbledon.

Neither woman played with a ton of subtlety, mainly trading stinging groundstrokes from the baseline on exchanges that grew in intensity as the 2-hour, 34-minute encounter went along.

The 37-year-old Williams and the 24-year-old Stephens both survived third-set tiebreak wins by near-identical scores Tuesday at the US Open. She has in fact played in two this year, at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

"You know, definitely when I had opportunities in the second set and so many break points disappearing, you feel like, wow, I should be doing more", said Williams. "I'm so fortunate to have won that match", said Williams. "What else can I say except I'm glad to see her back". Latvian 16th seed Anastasija Sevastova rallied to eliminate the five-time Grand Slam champion 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 at Arthur Ashe Stadium, booking a quarter-final against American Sloane Stephens, who ousted Germany's Julia Goerges 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

"When I started my comeback at Wimbledon, I could have never even dreamed of something like this happening, having these results", Stephens said after the match. I'm not thinking like that anymore. "A lot of times in those matches I just felt a little unlucky". The 27-year-old also gained a berth in the quarters in 2015, when she lost to eventual champion Flavia Pennetta.

Wednesday's women's quarterfinals could set up an all-American semifinals as (1) Karolina Pliskova squares off against (20) CoCo Vandeweghe, and (15) Madison Keys meets Kaia Kanepi.

It's all insane uncommon, and in an era in which, Williams said, "I mean, the depth in the game is so much deeper now than it was (in 1997, when she started)". "Seeing all the American players in the draw and all of them advancing so deep and competing so well - all I have known all my life was great American players. I hope it can continue". If there is any consolation for her from this loss, it may be that the narrative following Kvitova through the rest of the season and into 2018 will be about what she does on the court, rather than what she has endured off it.

"I couldn't walk. I couldn't do all the things that I wanted to do. So I know that so I am going to try to take it". "I'm really enjoying it more than before".

Is Venus Williams capable of winning the US Open? I'm happy she's still playing.

In her entirely different circumstances, Williams will walk out as a marvel.

"So probably my mind was just there, thinking about it". "And then, yeah, look, there, semifinal, semifinal, semifinal". "I'd love that."This is incredible", Stephens said".

Her ranking was No. 934 before this recent streak of success.
