Trump visit spotlights big ND refinery

President Donald Trump is expected to tout North Dakota's energy and agriculture economy Wednesday as he speaks on tax reform from the Mandan Refinery with several members of his Cabinet in tow.

Republican Sen. John Hoeven and Republican Rep. Kevin Cramer, weighing a bid to challenge Heitkamp, also will be in attendance.

"Good woman. I think we'll have your support", said Mr. Trump. Heidi Heitkamp during his Wednesday visit, though it's not clear he'll be as direct as he was a week ago in Missouri regarding another Democrat facing reelection next year.

"We want our companies to hire and grow in America, to raise wages for American workers, and to help rebuild our American cities and towns", Trump said.

"We're going to cut taxes", Trump vowed during a Roosevelt Room meeting with the so-called Big Six tax negotiators - National Economic Council Director Gary Cohn, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, House Speaker Paul Ryan, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, and the leaders of the congressional tax-writing committees.

But when he takes his tax-cuts road show to stop No. 2 in North Dakota on Wednesday, he is expected to pull his punches on that state's Democratic senator, Heidi Heitkamp.

On the statutory corporate tax rate, or what the government has on the books as the business tax rate, Trump is correct when it comes to developed nations.

According to a report from the Congressional Budget Office, when taking out various deductions and tax breaks for corporations, the United States ranked fourth among G-20 countries in effective corporate tax rates - what countries actually pay. Claire McCaskill stayed away. State Sen. Kelly Armstrong, chairman of the North Dakota Republican Party, said the event is an "invite-only" policy speech, and a senior White House official said about 700 people will attend.

Trump handedly won the state during the 2016 election.

Trump's trip takes him to friendly territory: He won North Dakota by 36 points previous year and has championed policies that benefit its energy sector. The White House is also targeting Sen. Further, "Homeowners already pay 83 percent of all federal income taxes, and this share would go even higher under similar reform proposals". She thanked North Dakotans for their past support, noting, "you treated us very, very well in November".
