Rohingya crisis: Suu Kyi blasts 'misinformation'

Put pressure on Myanmar for Rohingya repatriation Hasina urges

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India shares Myanmar's concern about "extremist violence" in its Rakhine state where security forces have been engaged in a bloody battle against Rohingya insurgents, forcing thousands of people to flee neighbouring Bangladesh and India.

The envoy added that the Prime Minister will also be visiting the Kali Temple, one of the oldest temples in Yangon, the mausoleum of the last Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar and also pay his respects at the martyrs mausoleum in Myanmar which is a mark of respect to founding father of this country, General Aung San.

Modi announced free visas for Myanmar nationals keen to visit India, standing next to Suu Kyi - the country's State Counsellor and de-facto leader - in Nay Pyi Taw, at a time his administration has declared plans to deport 40,000 illegal Rohingya refugees now in India.

After the talks, 11 agreements were signed between the two sides in areas like maritime security, strengthening democratic institutions in Myanmar, health and IT.

"We don't want any more migrants, North-East shouldn't be used for further shelter of anybody including Rohingya Muslims", he said, echoing what appears to be the policy of the NDA government for the rest of the country too. He had visited Myanmar earlier in 2014 for the ASEAN-India Summit, but this is his first bilateral visit.

Senate Standing Committee on Human Rights Chairperson Nasreen Jalil told Express that the genocide of Rohinya Muslims has intensified in recent days and Pakistan should end trade with Myanmar in response, taking a cue from the Maldives, which has already done so.

Prime Minister Modi also presented the country's President, U. Htin Kyaw, a reproduction of a 1841-map of a stretch of the River Salween (that flows from the Tibetan Plateau into the Andaman Sea) and a sculpture of the Bodhi tree. The Prime Minister had in the meantime visited every other neighbour - except the politically unstable Maldives - for bilateral meetings. China wields influence with several of the militant groups that Suu Kyi has tried to bring to a dialogue with the government - giving it leverage in Myanmar's peace process that India can't match.

■ Would like to thank India for taking a strong stand on the terror threat that Myanmar faced recently: State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi. Over 40,000 Rohingyas are believed to be staying illegally within India.
