Nissan aims for pole position in electric cars with longer-range Leaf

However, a higher power version with increased motor power and battery capability will be released at the end of 2018.

New technology in the LEAF includes the ProPilot driver assistance system which makes driving safer and easier on single-lane roads, and the ProPilot Park which will automatically control acceleration, steering and braking to park the vehicle. ProPilot also comes with start-stop technology, so it'll stop automatically in traffic - and only needs a touch of the accelerator to get going again.

Nonetheless, Nissan CEO Hiroto Saikawa said in a statement the new e-car strengthened the firm's "leadership" in the electric vehicle sector.

The next-generation Nissan Leaf will go on sale in Japan next month, but will not arrive stateside until early-2018.

Also, Nissan Leaf 2018 is available in three different models. Simultaneously, the Leaf also offers the various modern conveniences on which many automobile industries are working; including the driver assist system of Nissan, called as "ProPILOT Assist" that combines lane keeping and adaptive cruise control.

Nissan has sold nearly 300,000 units of the first-generation Leaf and the car's sales remain robust even at the end of its model cycle.

The new Leaf's features a sleeker shape which also ensures it is slipperier through the air.

However, in terms of distance-per-charge, Nissan's latest offering still trails behind models such as Tesla's Model 3 and the Chevrolet Bolt, which can run 220 and 238 miles respectively.

In addition, Nissan has installed in the new Leaf the e-Pedal technology, which automatically applies the brakes when drivers lift their foot off the accelerator.

Slightly longer and wider than the Hyundai Creta, one of India's best-selling sport utility vehicles, the Nissan Leaf is a five-seater auto that offers a cargo space of 435 litres. As you press down on the accelerator or release pressure, the vehicle will go faster, slow down, or come to a halt completely.

The 2018 Nissan Leaf EV (electric vehicle) was revealed to the world last night (Sept 5) during simultaneous events in Tokyo, Japan, and Las Vegas, Nevada. The new e-Pedal system will accelerate and decelerate, stop or hold with intelligence. The deliveries are said to begin in January 2018 in the US, Canada, and Europe. The introduction of the new Leaf is likely to further intensify competition in the EV market.

"There really is no outstanding attractive quality about an electric vehicle", he said, noting drawbacks such as finding charging stations, as well as the time needed to charge even with fast chargers.

Prices have yet to be announced, but the existing Leaf starts at around £26,000.
