Anderson beats Querrey in last 8 to spoil American party

Kevin Anderson tennis pro founder of Realife Tennis

Kevin Anderson reached his first Grand Slam semifinals after defeating American Sam Querrey in tough battle in the early hours of Wednesday morning. "Both of us struggled for rhythm", said Anderson.

"That was one of my goals, just to try and further my previous best result", Anderson said.

"I tried to be focused all the time, play aggressive".

The match, which followed quarterfinal women's victories by Americans Sloane Stephens and Venus Williams, matched two big servers in the 6-6 Querrey and 6-8 Anderson.

"Pretty happy. At the beginning of the week, if you said I would have made quarters, I probably would have signed up for that". And now I am in the semi-finals of the US Open, and I think it's as important as if Rafa arrives to the semi-finals.

The 17th-seeded Querrey can blame himself for a meltdown in the first set tiebreak, where he lost five points in a row to allow Anderson into the lead under the lights on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Querrey saved a first match point with an ace at 6-5, set up a set point at 7-6, which Anderson staved off by forcing his opponent to slice a backhand into the net. "It's just tough. I thought he played really well in the big points". "You know, it just happened really quick, I guess".

Anderson said that after saving seven set points and losing the tiebreaker anyway, perhaps he "would have been better off losing that tiebreaker, 7-1".

"I felt I did a fantastic job resetting".

Querrey had the momentum when he won the second-set tiebreak 11-9, despite squandering a 6-1 lead.

The second match point was good enough for Anderson, who dominated the rally until Querrey's forehand sailed long.

Anderson said after the match he heard from a number of prominent South Africans offering congratulations, including tennis player Wayne Ferreira and golfers Ernie Els and Louis Oosthuizen. After reaching his first-ever major quarterfinal last year at Wimbledon, he bested that at this year's grass-court fortnight by reaching the semis before his quarterfinal appearance at Flushing Meadows.

It helps that he has had a favorable draw.

The matchup was the tallest in a grand slam quarterfinal, semifinal or final in the Open Era.
