US Open 2017: Marin Cilic loses to Diego Schwartzman in third round

Schwartzman reached the last 16 of a Grand Slam for the first time

Cilic, the highest seed in a clear bottom half of the draw, eventually paid the price for his lack of match practice after skipping the U.S. Open warm-up tournaments in Montreal and Cincinnati due to injury.

But nobody had forecast what was to happen as another upset rocked the bottom half of the draw.

After beating Tsonga in round two, Shapovalov had a stroke of luck when third-round opponent Kyle Edmund suffered a back problem during the third set and pulled out with the Canadian leading 3-6 6-3 6-3 1-0. "I played good matches but I lost". He'll be bidding for a place in the quarter-finals later on Sunday, with the match scheduled to be second on the Grandstand Court.

Schwartzman progresses to the last 16 for what is now his best performance at a grand slam, the 25-year-old having also reached the third round at the French Open this year.

The Spaniard, who has not dropped a set, will become the first player to face four qualifiers at a Grand Slam in the Open Era (since 1967).

The teen will next meet No. 12 seed Pablo Carreno Busta, who beat veteran qualifier Nicholas Mahut 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.

Cilic, the only defending US Open champion in the bottom half of the bracket, lost a test of endurance as Schwartzman battled through set after the set for the win.

Marin Cilic of Croatia serves to Diego Schwartzman of Argentina on day five of the U.S. Open tennis tournament at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Cilic won the 2014 title at Flushing Meadows.

Marin Cilic, of Croatia, returns a shot from Diego Schwartzman, of Argentina, during the third round of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Friday, Sept. 1, 2017, in NY.

"Obviously I'm super-excited", United States ninth seed Venus said. "Words can't describe" during a pre-match interview with the host broadcaster, ESPN. Straight set wins over Berlocq and Tipsarevic seeing him reach the third round in NY for the first time.

"I think many players are doing well this week, and they are taking the opportunities". "I've been spoiled my whole career of having my family around me".

So we here at Real Sport made a decision to take a look at who is most likely to come through and make the final. There's times when they don't come. He has, however, continued his great form with a straight sets victory over Medvedev in the first round.

It is unimaginable to think that Stephens was ranked in the 900s this time two months ago.

The tournament is without the injured Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka as well as Novak Djokovic, who has ended his season.

She eliminated Venus Williams and already ousted second-ranked Simona Halep from the top spot chase.

The 2006 champion remains undefeated in night matches played on Arthur Ashe Stadium, and it might take more than just Serena Williams (next year at the earliest) for that streak to come to an end sometime soon. A quarterfinalist in 2011, Isner is always looked at as a danger in any tournament he plays thanks to his fearsome serve.

World number one Rafael Nadal, all-time Grand Slam victor Roger Federer, Austrian Dominic Thiem and Belgium's David Goffin are the only players ranked in the top 10 that remain in NY.
