A Special Task force of Uttar Pradesh Police has arrested Kafeel Khan, the nodal officer of the 100-bed AES (acute encephalitis syndrome) and the third accused in the mass deaths of children in Gorakhpur's BRD hospital.

Ever since, police had been conducting raids in various locations in order to apprehend the accused. Amitabh Yash, IG Special Rask Force said that the doctor was arrested on 2 September from Gorakhpur and he has been handed over to the Gorakhpur police.

A day after a local court here issued non bailable warrants against seven accused including Khan, STF nabbed him from the outskirts of Gorakhpur.

Confirming that Khan was "apprehended", a STF official on Saturday described it as major breakthrough in the case.

Two days back Dr Rajiv and his medico-wife Purnima Shukla were sent to judicial custody for 14 days. On his visit to Gorakhpur on August 14, he had reportedly singled out for reprimanding Dr Kafeel for hogging the limelight.

Mishra was suspended as principal of the medical college on 12 August after the deaths were reported.

The medical college attracted global attention when more than 60 children, mostly infants, died at the hospital within the span of a week last month. He was accused of taking leave without following protocol on 11 August, the day oxygen supply started facing a shortage, and not informing his superiors, as overseeing the supply department, of the crisis in proper time. There were allegations that the deaths occurred due to disruption in oxygen supply as the vendor had not been paid for several months.

Later, the doctor was removed from his post and an FIR was lodged against him along with eight others after Chief Secretary Rajive Kumar submitted his report.

The BRD hospital is the biggest medical facility in the eastern part of Uttar Pradesh state, which is among India's poorest regions with the country's worst child mortality rates, Kumar said.
