Rajiv Pratap Rudy says his resignation was Centre's 'decision, prerogative'

Ministers resign as PM Narendra Modi plans major Cabinet reshuffle

Rajiv Pratap Rudy, who resigned as Skill Development Minister, amidt news of Modi Cabinet reshuffle has said that he stepped down from the post on party's order.

Government sources have also said that the six ministers who were asked to resign late last week were dropped because they were evaluated as non-performers.

A rejig of the government has been due for months now, especially after vacancies and transformed alliances.

Last week, Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu too had offered to resign taking "full moral responsibility" for the recent train accidents.

The exercise to rehuffle the Union Cabinet - the third in as many years - has gained momentum with several Union Ministers being summoned by BJP president Amit Shah today.

Uma Bharti and Nirmala Sitharaman have also offered to resign along with Rudy.

Pandey's exit was rumoured over the past few days after he was appointed as the Uttar Pradesh BJP chief.

The last cabinet reshuffle took place in July past year in which Modi inducted 19 new faces and elevated Minister of State for Environment Prakash Javadekar to cabinet rank.

AIADMK leader and Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker M. Thambi Durai met Shah on Thursday, leading to speculation that the party might become part of the Union Council of Minister.

According to TV reports, Union Minister Arun Jaitley is likely to give up the defence portfolio, which he was heading after the resignation of Manohar Parrikar in March.

Currently, two key ministries are without a full-time minister.

When Jaitley was asked how long he would have dual charge of the finance and defence ministries, he had replied: "At least, I hope, not very long".

Besides Jaitley, three other union ministers are also holding additional charges of different ministries.

However, the faction-ridden AIADMK is not likely to be invited to join the Cabinet.

Union Science and Technology Minister Harsh Vardhan is holding additional charge of the Environment portfolio following the death of Anil Madhav Dave in May.

Some election-bound states, including Congress-ruled Karnataka, could get greater representation in the council of ministers.
