Tropical Storm Jose Becomes the 10th Named Storm of the Hurricane Season

Tropical Storm Jose looms right behind Hurricane Irma

A new tropical storm has formed behind Hurricane Irma the Atlantic Ocean.

Hurricane force winds extend outward to about 45 miles from the center and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 140 miles from the center.

Jose is expected to gain strength the next few days and become a hurricane later in the week as it tracks toward the west-northwest.

Irma, said to have winds of 180 miles per hour, is expected to pass north of Antigua and near Barbados on Tuesday night.

Jose will likely become a hurricane by later in the week. I have continued to be briefed by the Florida Division of Emergency Management on Hurricane Irma and current forecast models have Florida in Irma's path - potentially impacting millions of Floridians.

Jose was about 1,500 miles east of the Caribbean and was so far expected to travel to the northwest, above the Caribbean. The latest minimum central pressure reported by reconnaissance aircraft is 931 mb. It's still unclear how Irma will affect the United States, though Florida is bracing for a possible hit.

The chance of direct impacts from Irma later this week and this weekend is increasing in the Florida Keys and portions of the Florida Peninsula, but forecasters say it is still too early to specify the timing and magnitude of the impacts.

Jose, which is the tenth tropical storm of the season, formed over the Atlantic; with the National Hurricane Centre (NHC) on Tuesday noting that there were "no coastal watches or warnings in effect" for Jose.
