Theresa May ready to intensify Brexit talks with EU: Spokesperson

David Davis arrives in Downing Street for Cabinet following the summer break

The Prime Minister's spokesman indicated the Government wants to "intensify" negotiations - which are now only happening for one week in every month.

"We want to leave in an orderly and smooth manner", Davis said. "They think the longer they drag it out, the more desperate we will be for a deal and will accept any terms" - she stressed.

"We're going through [the bill] line by line, and they're finding it hard because we've got good lawyers".

"We're quite far from being able to say sufficient progress has taken place", Barnier said in a joint press conference with Davis.

While various Eurosceptic MPs have been vocal in dismissing talk that the United Kingdom should pay anything to leave the bloc, Brexit secretary David Davis has openly acknowledged there is likely to be some kind of "obligation".

The "strict position" was that there was "no enforceable" legal basis for the United Kingdom to pay money to Brussels but "we are a country that meets its global obligations - but they have got to be there".

European Union leaders will review the talks in October to see how far they have got and whether it is possible to then take up London's demand for negotiations on a free trade deal but there is growing speculation the issue will be put back to December.

The schedule agreed by United Kingdom and EU Brexit negotiators dictates talks can only begin if EU leaders decide at an EU Council meeting on 19 October that "sufficient progress" has been made on divorce talks, according to the Financial Times.

Also, Tory MP for South West Wiltshire, Andrew Murrison said angrily: "If Michel Barnier wants to "educate" United Kingdom public on risks of quitting single market, will he be "educating" European Union on risks of no United Kingdom trade deal?"

"They are sitting and laughing at you, because they are taking your vote and they're just trying to be all things to all people".

The big sticking point is money: how much the United Kingdom is prepared to pay toward commitments the European Union has made on the assumption of continued United Kingdom membership.

Frenchman Michel Barnier tweeted: 'I said: #Brexit = occasion to explain single market benefits in all countries, [including] my own.

United Kingdom officials played down a suggestion by Guy Verhofstadt, the European Parliament's chief Brexit negotiator, that the resumption of the talks could be delayed to allow Mrs May to make "an important intervention" on 21 September.

The Brexit Secretary will make a statement in the Commons as MPs return from the summer break.

"In its current form the legislation denies parliament its centuries-old right to scrutinise Bills and instead hands extreme powers to the government".

One of the key concerns about the Repeal Bill is that it would allow so-called "Henry VIII powers", meaning ministers can change primary legislation using secondary legislation without parliament's intervention.
