Safety JJ Wilcox Traded to Steelers

Winners and losers from Broncos final preseason game

The Steelers sent a 2018 sixth-round pick to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and got safety J.J. Wilcox, plus a 2019 seventh-round pick, as they reinforced their thinning safety position.

This is the Steelers third trade in two days. He should still start Week 1 for Tampa Bay. Sep.

First-choice free safety Mike Mitchell has said he plans to play on Sunday, Sept. 10 against the Cleveland Browns, but also cautioned that it would be somewhat arrogant to assume he could step straight back onto the field.

Former Denver Broncos safety T.J. Ward has a new home.

Backups Jordan Dangerfield and Robert Golden are core special-teamers, but the secondary as a whole was not crisp early in the preseason, and the Steelers look ready to upgrade in case their starters go down again.

He was brought in to challenge for a starting role but wound up behind Chris Conte and Keith Tandy on the depth chart.

Wilcox was selected in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys.

Wilcox's strength is his physicality - he's a thumper. Ward had been scheduled to make a non-guaranteed $4.5 million with the Broncos in the final year of the four-year contract he signed in 2014 but was cut after three seasons.

Ward totaled 222 tackles, five sacks, three interceptions, 19 passes defensed, five forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in regular-season action with the Broncos.
