PM Modi to Hold Bilateral Talks With Jinping, May Discuss Doklam Standoff

Prime Minister Narendra Modi shakes hands with Chinese President Xi Jinping

Xiamen - Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday urged Brics nations to deepen coordination on global matters, and push for a more "just" world order, by boosting representation for emerging and developing countries in worldwide bodies.

Saran confirmed the text of the declaration posted online on the Indian Ministry of External Affairs' website. It was the second time the leaders had met in three months, but the first since a tense Himalayan border standoff that was the most serious military confrontation between the two countries in decades.

"Both the leaders at their meet at Astana in July had agreed that India and China are natural large powers and that there will be areas of differences".

BRICS countries have actively carried out cooperation among their legislatures, political parties, young people, think tanks and local regions, Xi added.

An important consensus was that peace and tranquility in border areas was "a prerequisite" for developing ties, Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar said.

Noting that the two neighboring countries are the world's two largest emerging market and developing countries, Xi told Modi that healthy and stable bilateral relations are also in line with the expectations of the region and the worldwide community. "And that there should be more effort made to further enhance and strengthen the level of mutual trust between the two sides", said Jaishankar.

Leaders attending the ninth BRICS Summit here have reached extensive consensus on the worldwide situation, global governance and cooperation among the five-emerging economies, Xi Jinping told the media at the end of the Summit.

Modi also held bilateral meetings with Russian president Putin and Brazilian President Temer on the sidelines of the BRICS summit today.

China, a key ally of Pakistan, has repeatedly blocked India's attempts to have the leader of Jaish-e-Mohammad, Masood Azhar, put on a U.N. Security Council terror blacklist. In his speech, Modi said that he sees huge energy and potential in the Indian community that is based in the US. "We recommit to our existing pledge for both a standstill and a rollback of protectionist measures and we call upon other countries to join us in that commitment", the declaration said.

Terrorism was not discussed at the bilateral, although it figured in discussions in the lead up to the BRICS Summit, which on Monday issued a declaration that strongly endorsed India's concerns and named several Pakistan-based groups.
