Degrees: San Francisco Breaks All-Time Heat Record

Local News

San Francisco itself saw one of the hottest days in its history Friday at 106 but is now expected to recede into its usual cool-and-foggy summer pattern with dramatic temperature drops into the 80s then the 70s.

Los Angeles resident Tracy Goldman had her vehicle packed in case officials ordered her street to evacuate.

Across the bay, Livermore will expected to reach 115 degrees, a temperature last seen in 1950, forecasters said.

Tourists snapped shots of their planes landing against a backdrop of orange flames in the hills near Hollywood Burbank airport.

"It's too much energy to run it", she said.

Dozens of cooling centers opened throughout California, schools let students out early and outdoor events were canceled Friday as temperatures soared from a heat wave expected to last through the Labor Day weekend. Three structures had burned, at least two of them homes, but fire officials said they were confident they could tame the blaze unless winds picked up.

Trost says the rail system also has paramedics and air-conditioner technicians on standby during the heat wave.

Mayor Garcetti declared an emergency and asked the governor to do the same so state and federal assistance would be provided quickly.

Another wildfire burning near Yosemite had grown to 8.5 square miles (22 square kilometers) and entered the Nelder Grove of 106 giant sequoias, despite firefighters' efforts to stave it off.

Wildfires across the West have worsened conditions for residents in the region.

A red flag warning for an increase in fire danger was also issued for parts of the region.

ALL-TIME RECORD high temperature broken in San Francisco. Officials warned of wildfire danger as hot, dry, smoky days were forecast across OR and Washington over the holiday weekend. About 3,800 homes were threatened, authorities said.

In addition, the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has extended the current Air Quality Alert until further notice, meaning wildfire smoke will continue to pour into the southwest part of the state.

Officials said there is a high risk of heat-related illness especially for sensitive groups such as the elderly, children, sick people, along with pets and livestock.

Managers of California's power grid are asking for voluntary conservation of electricity as forecasters predict more extreme heat statewide.
